CHICAGO: Two people have been killed and eight more injured after a shooting near a fast food restaurant in Chicago left bystanders dispersed, authorities said.
The shooting happened around 10:40 p.m. Thursday near a McDonald’s on the city’s Near North Side, a few blocks from the city’s Magnificent Mile shopping district. One person has been arrested and a weapon has been found, the police said in a statement.
Details about what led to the shooting were not immediately released by police, but a witness, Deonna Jackson, 18, said the shooting appeared to have been the result of an argument outside the restaurant.
“When the fight started, we were right next to them,” Jackson told the Chicago Sun-Times. “We had to run because I didn’t want anyone to wave at me.”
The shooting comes amid a spate of deadly violence in the city in recent years. And it follows a deadly shooting last weekend at Millennium Park in downtown Chicago that killed a teenager and led the city to tighten a curfew on youth as part of efforts to curb violence.
When paramedics and officers responded Thursday, a fight broke out between two people across the street from the shooting scene, the Chicago Tribune reported, with some people crossing a police tape and arguing with officers before being taken away.
Police did not immediately release the names or ages of the dead. Additional details about the circumstances of the shooting were not immediately released. An investigation was underway.
