Outgoing Victorian Deputy Prime Minister James Merlino says he knew in his heart he didn’t have the “fuel in the tank” for another term in cabinet when he announced his resignation.
“Someone wise once said to me; When you get into politics, think about how you want to get out of politics,” Merlino said at a media conference on Friday.
“And that stuck with me … I just knew in my heart, I have no fuel in the tank for another term.”
Mr Merlino also said he spoke from the heart when he saw how politics has had an impact on his family and children.
“It has a disproportionate impact on our partners and on our children, and it is in ways big and small.”
