Man fights for life after fire at Sydney Nitro Champs drag race event

A man has been seriously injured in a drag race accident at a Sydney racetrack.

Paramedics were called to Sydney Dragway around 5.15pm today for what a witness described as a fire involving the engine of a car, a New South Wales Ambulance spokesman told 9News.com.au.

Top Fuel Australia confirmed that there had been a “start line incident” involving the Jim Read Racing team on today’s Nitro Champs at the Eastern Creek location.

An ambulance spokesman said four people had been taken to hospital, including a man in his 20s who was in critical condition at Westmead Hospital.

He said the man suffered burns, while others suffered minor injuries.

Top Fuel Australia asked fans to “send love and care” to the affected team.

“A full investigation is underway with IHRA Australia, the Sydney Dragway sanctioning body,” the organization said on Facebook at around 8:15 p.m.

“Given that, Top Fuel will not be making any further comment at this time, other than to say that our thoughts are with the team members involved and that they are all in good hands.”
