Mathieu van der Poel wants to defend the Giro d’Italia lead in the opening time trial

huhhello and welcome to our live blog of the second stage of the Giro d’Italia, the 9.2 kilometer time trial around Budapest, Hungary.

After yesterday’s slower stage – virtually nothing happened during the 190km opening before all hell broke loose on the uphill finale – today will see the first of two time trials at this year’s Giro. But before looking at the course, let’s give a quick recap and look at the early standings in the top standings, in other words those races where the jerseys are handed out to the respective leaders.

Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix), the Dutchman who won Friday’s stage with a signature display of powerful riding to finish ahead Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Materials) and Pello Bilbao (Bahrain Victorious), will wear the maglia rosa or pink leader’s jersey for the first time during his career debut in the Giro.
